Caledyne is committed to developing products focused on the advancement of down hole technologies. An area of particular interest is metal-to-metal sealing. We have developed a wholly metal-to-metal fully retrievable seal element, which is retrofittable to industry standard downhole tools: including packers (permanent and retrievable), liner hangers, retrievable bridge plugs and cast iron bridge plugs. We currently have seals available in sizes 5", 5.1/2", 6.5/8", 7" and 9.5/8", with more sizes under development. Most seals have been qualified to ISO 14310 level V3 which have been fitted to a number of downhole tools from various service companies. The seal is rapidly gaining market acceptence with the number of successfull installations increasing on a daily basis, giving clear evidence that metal-to-metal sealing technologies are the way forward!! Background Development of mature and more complex oil fields As global oilfields are maturing and all the “easy” oil has been produced, different techniques are used to extract the oil from the ground. Some of the challenges operators are dealing with now are steam flood/steam drive where temperatures of up to 600degF are required to produce heavy oil, how to cope with the high levels of H2S/CO2 and finding downhole equipment suitable for HTHP environments. The common problem with the challenges listed above is the sealing technology. A metal-to-metal seal would solve many of the problems and allow operators to confidently develop their fields. Industry trend towards cleaner energy Cleaner energy is a subject that is on everyone’s wish list and many different techniques are used. One of them that is rapidly gaining in popularity in certain areas of the world is the Geothermal energy. As we are dealing with extremely high temperatures of up to 750 degF, a reliable seal that can withstand temperature changes is required. A metal-to-metal seal would again allow the operators to break through several barriers and drill and produce from wells that are currently beyond the limits. MTM Seal
